Snowshoeing

Walking atop the snow Have you tried it?

Have your own snowshoes? Take advantage of your safe, scenic parks — or if not, borrow a pair from us!

Please enjoy perusing the resources below, including information about snowshoe borrowing at The West Woods Nature Center, which is currently underway for the 2025-26 season! For a trail map of the park, click here.

Snowshoe Borrowing Guidelines

For a snowshoe adventure at The West Woods, you’ll first need at least four inches of “good snow” (not icy or super fluffy) on the ground — and the deeper the snow, the better for any snowshoe adventure.

Please note that snow conditions change often in Northeast Ohio, so you may wish to check weather conditions for ZIP code 44072 online or call us to learn if we have enough snow to make your experience memorable.

On days when there is enough snow, snowshoes are available first come, first served, free to Geauga County residents and $5 for out-of-county residents (credit card only). Borrowing can take place daily 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and last up to two hours, noting that all snowshoes must be returned by 4 p.m. Feel free to call 440-286-9516 to check availability, but please understand that no reservations will be taken.

Borrowers must be 18+ to check out a pair; anyone younger must be accompanied by an adult. Borrowers are also required to complete this waiver form and leave a driver’s license with the front desk as a security deposit.

To prepare yourself for your experience, we suggest you watch this instructional video with Naturalist Trevor. To save time, learn your size before you arrive using our snowshoe size chart. (Are snowshoes available for children? Yes — we now have sizes for youth ages 3-6 and under 50 lbs!) And finally, please read our complete rules and regulations. For instance, snowshoes may not leave The West Woods except for registered programs.

We look forward to seeing you in snowshoes this winter!

Exceptions: Snowshoe borrowing will be unavailable/available at unconventional times on the following dates. For program details, click Programs & Events above, then filter by program activity Snowshoeing. (We will also update the website below if we know that weather conditions are unfavorable, but please don’t rely on this website entirely; for current weather conditions before heading out, please call our front desk instead.)
