• Eastern Bluebirds in winter?

    Question

Hi - I'm seeing a group of eastern blue birds fairly often at my feeders in Hambden this winter. Usually a group of about 6 or 8 every couple of days. Just curious if there be may be some reason. Thanks.

    Naturalist's Response

Eastern Bluebirds will stay in our area all year as long as they can find a food source. In the winter they eat dried berries and other dried fruits. They will also come to feeders. My co-worker makes a peanut butter concoction, the recipe for which I can never remember, and the bluebirds go crazy over it. If these food items run out they will leave the area to find other places with food.
